How can I monitor competitor websites for changes?

Learn how to track changes on competitor websites, such as pricing, product, and messaging updates. This helps your team spot meaningful competitive moves without checking sites manually.

ChangeTower lets you keep an eye on your competitors' websites and get notified when something important changes, like a new pricing plan, a product launch, or a shift in messaging. Follow these steps to set up competitor monitoring.

Step 1: Decide which competitor pages to monitor

Monitoring a competitor's homepage alone rarely tells you much. Instead, choose the pages where meaningful changes happen, for example:

  • Pricing and plans pages

  • Product, features, and solutions pages

  • Changelog, release notes, or "What's new" pages

  • Customer stories and case studies

  • Press, news, or blog pages

  • Careers pages (new roles often hint at new markets or products)

Step 2: Create a Smart Monitor for each type of page

In the left navigation menu, click on New Monitor, then select Smart Monitor. In the 'Notify me when' section, describe the change you care about. For example:

  • Notify me when a pricing plan is added, removed, or its price changes

  • Notify me when a new feature or product is announced

  • Notify me when a new customer story is published

You'll only be notified when a change matches your criteria, and the notification will explain why. Read our Smart Monitor guide to learn more.

Step 3: Add multiple competitors at once (optional)

If you're tracking the same type of page across several competitors, such as every competitor's pricing page, use New Monitor > Monitor Multiple Pages to import them in one go with the same criteria. Our guide to importing URLs walks you through it.

Step 4: Organize monitors with tags

Add a tag for each competitor (and optionally for each page type) so you can filter notifications by competitor. Learn more in our guide to tags.

Step 5: Reduce noise

If you're using content change monitoring instead of a Smart Monitor, you can focus on specific parts of a page or ignore parts that change often, such as testimonial carousels or cookie banners.

Step 6: Share changes with your team

Competitive changes are most useful when the right people see them:

Create monitors right from your browser

Browsing a competitor's site and spot a page worth watching? With the ChangeTower Chrome extension, you can set up a monitor without leaving the page. Click the ChangeTower icon in your browser toolbar and describe what to watch for, for example "Notify me if the Enterprise plan price changes."
